BIO

Teresa Kuan is an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Dr. Kuan was originally trained as a medical anthropologist under the supervision of Cheryl Mattingly in the anthropology department at the University of Southern California. She has since then taken interest in psychological expertise as a cultural phenomenon. In her forthcoming book, Love’s Uncertainty: The Politics and Ethics of Childrearing in Contemporary China, she examines the emergence of the idea of the “psychological child” – its influence and its limits – in relation to popular childrearing advice, the “suzhi jiaoyu” education reform movement, and the politics of population quality. She is currently developing a new project on the localization of family therapy in mainland China.
